KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — The revision of the teachers’ remuneration scheme announced during the recent Teachers’ Day is still being formulated, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin explained yesterday.

The Barisan Nasional (BN) administration had announced pay rises for 7,000 senior educators and raised the pay ceiling for all teachers as it prepares to call a general election that is expected within the year.

But the move has sparked discontent in some quarters within the teaching field, particularly diploma holders, as well as Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services’s (Cuepacs).

“We are in the laboratory process to discuss the matter in detail, it concerns not only the principals, but the teachers’ post in general,” Muhyiddin, who holds the education portfolio, was quoted saying by Bernama Online.

He added that the revised pay packages will be submitted for a Cabinet review once completed and await the approval of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Both BN and rivals Pakatan Rakyat (PR) have been openly courting the teaching profession ahead of a general election expected within the year.

In its Buku Jingga election manifesto, PR has promised a RM500 monthly allowance for teachers if it takes power after the next election.
